A first impression

A quiet, unshowy toner for skin that has started feeling thirsty rather than oily. Hydrabio is Bioderma's range for dehydrated skin, and the tonic is the least heralded member of the family – which is a shame, because it is arguably the most useful one in a perimenopausal routine.

Why eMaison chose it

Dehydration – as distinct from dryness – becomes a near-permanent condition after forty. Skin can feel tight, look dull, and still produce the same amount of oil it always did. Hydrabio is built around Bioderma's Aquagenium technology, which borrows from the botanical world to support the skin's own aquaporins – the tiny channels that move water between cells. Alcohol-free and lightly fragranced, it earned its place because it does a narrow, useful job: preparing the skin to receive whatever comes next, from a serum to a richer night cream.

How it fits into your rituals

Morning and evening, after cleansing, before anything else. Saturate a cotton pad or press into damp hands and smooth over face and neck. Follow with your serum – SVR Ampoule C, or whatever sits in your evening rotation – and moisturiser. Especially useful after long-haul travel, or on the London mornings when the heating has run all night. Skin drinks it in within about twenty seconds.

What's in it

Bioderma's Aquagenium complex, glycerin and apple-seed extract. Alcohol-free. Light fragrance, which some will notice and some will not.

The honest note

It is not a treatment step. Used without a moisturiser on top, it will not hold skin through a long day. Treat it as a preparation, not a product in its own right.
